Driving, 2014

Driving investigates the Australian pastime of off-road four-wheel driving. This activity provides the individual with a means of accessing a place, through which Williams adopts a cross-disciplinary approach to investigate the ways that humanity negotiates the natural features of the Australian outback.

A new series of photographs were presented alongside a sculptural work and video piece for Williams’ 2014 solo exhibition, Crafted Land. All of the works were the result of focussed development within the artist’s family property in the Blue Mountains. For Crafted Land, Williams utilised the cinematic potential of night and day-time location shooting. Car-mounted videography and naturalistic editing are implemented in the screen and photographic works to evoke suspense and trauma within the Australian bushland, as viewed behind the headlights of a roaming off-road vehicle.
